An AltTab alternative for Mac

A flat row of thumbnails, or a scene you can search.

AltTab is the switcher most people try first, since it is free, open source, and actively maintained. If this page found you, you probably already know AltTab works well, and the real question is what happens once you are running forty windows with a browser full of tabs, since AltTab has no concept of a browser tab at all. The table below lines up permissions, search, tabs, and price using only what each app documents about itself, so you can see exactly where the two genuinely diverge.

FAQ

Does AltTab show browser tabs?

No. This was checked against AltTab's website, its README, and every string in its shipping localization file, and none of them show any concept of a browser tab. A browser window with twenty tabs is a single entry there. Here, every tab in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Brave, Edge, Vivaldi and Opera gets its own card wearing the icon of the site it is on, Safari's arriving once you have seen that tab in front, and they stack per window so a busy browser stays readable.

Does AltTab have search?

Only in AltTab Pro, a separate purchase at 9.99 USD for the current major version or 24.99 USD for lifetime updates. Search is included here from the first launch, and it matches more: the app name, the window title, and the website behind a browser tab. It is fuzzy and forgiving of typos, so typing giggle docs still finds every Google Docs tab you have open.

Does AltTab show windows in 3D?

No. AltTab draws a flat row or grid of thumbnails, which is Command-Tab with pictures added. This app arranges the same windows as real perspective cards in seven shapes, Cover Arc, Carousel, Ring, Flip 3D, Panorama, Grid and 2D Row, that you orbit with the trackpad. Change the shape while the switcher is open and the scene morphs into it, at 120 frames per second on a ProMotion display.

Is AltTab free?

Yes, and open source under the GPL-3.0 license. Search, two of its appearance styles, Auto Size and extra shortcuts sit in AltTab Pro, a separate purchase at 9.99 or 24.99 USD. Better Window Switcher is 19.99 USD once for two Macs with every feature in it, and nothing here moves behind a higher tier later. The seven day trial before that needs no account and no card.

What does Better Window Switcher do that AltTab cannot?

Four things. Browser tabs become their own cards with the real site icon. Search is included and matches the website behind a tab, not just the title. Windows are arranged as real 3D cards in seven shapes instead of a flat row. And with a file already in hand, you can summon the switcher and carry it to a window you could not otherwise reach.

Does AltTab record my screen in the background?

AltTab ships a setting whose own description is about avoiding the purple screen recording indicator, which is something you only need if an app captures while you are not looking. This app captures while the switcher is open, plus one warm-up pass shortly after it launches, and never continuously in the background. Nothing about your screen is recorded, saved or sent anywhere.

Is a 3D switcher slower than a flat one?

No. A quick tap of the shortcut jumps straight to your last window with nothing drawn on screen at all, the same instant response you would expect from any flat switcher. When the full scene does open, it runs at 120 frames per second on a ProMotion display, so orbiting between forty windows never feels like waiting on a load screen.

Can I try it before paying?

Yes. Every feature is unlocked for seven days with no account and no card required, so you can put it next to AltTab and judge for yourself before spending anything. After that there is a 14 day money back guarantee if you buy and change your mind, and nothing recurring ever after the one payment, on any of your Macs covered by the license.
