A Mission Control alternative with search

A spatial overview you look at vs a switcher you aim.

Mission Control is free and built into every Mac, and it is still how you manage your desktops. It lays out the windows on your current desktop in one flat layer, shows other desktops as thumbnails in the Spaces bar, and has no search. Better Window Switcher turns every window on every desktop into a 3D card you can search, browser tabs and minimized windows included, all in one view. The Mission Control rows come from Apple's own documentation.

When you know which window you want, Better Window Switcher gets you there faster. You type part of its name, and minimized and hidden windows are in the results too. Each window on another desktop gets a card of its own, where Mission Control shows a thumbnail of each desktop. Mission Control is free, built in and still the way to rearrange desktops. It cannot find a window, or the browser tab it is open in, from what you type.

FAQ

Does Mission Control show browser tabs?

No. In Mission Control a browser window with twenty tabs is one window, as it is everywhere else in macOS. Better Window Switcher gives every tab in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Brave, Edge, Vivaldi and Opera a card of its own. The tabs stack into one pile per window, so twenty tabs take up one place on screen, and you can filter them by title or by the website they are on.

Is Mission Control free?

Yes. It comes with every Mac, needs no download and no permissions, and opens with a trackpad gesture or Control-Up. Better Window Switcher is a separate app and a one-time purchase. What you pay for is search, browser tabs as cards of their own, minimized windows in the same view, and the windows of every desktop shown together instead of one desktop at a time.

Does Mission Control show minimized windows?

Apple's description of Mission Control covers the windows open on your current desktop and says nothing either way about minimized ones. Those sit in the Dock, not in the Mission Control layout. Better Window Switcher shows every minimized and hidden window as a card next to everything else, from every desktop at once, so you pick a window you tucked away in the Dock the same way as any other.

Can Mission Control search my windows?

No. Mission Control has no search or filter of any kind, and Apple documents no keyboard way to choose a window once it is open, only shortcuts to open and close it. Better Window Switcher opens with one shortcut and searches your windows and browser tabs as you type. It matches the app name, the window title and the website behind a tab, and it forgives small typos.

Does Mission Control show windows from other desktops?

Only as thumbnails. Apple's own description puts other Spaces and full screen apps in the Spaces bar, so you see each desktop as a whole, not the windows on it. Better Window Switcher puts every window from every desktop in the same view, each on its own card. You can search all of them by name, so you never have to remember which desktop you left a window on.

Can I jump to a window in Mission Control using the keyboard?

Only partly. Apple documents Control-Up to open Mission Control, Control-Down for App Exposé, and Control-Left and Control-Right to move between desktops. It documents no key for picking a window once the layout is open, so that part takes the trackpad or mouse. With Better Window Switcher you open the switcher, find a window and bring it to the front without taking your hands off the keyboard.

Why is this a 3D scene instead of a flat overview?

Better Window Switcher takes after Compiz and Beryl, the Linux desktops that turned window switching into a 3D scene you orbit. Orbiting a scene is a different way to recognize a window than scanning one flat layer of thumbnails. There are seven arrangements, and if you prefer something flatter, Grid and 2D Row are two of them. You can change the shape while the switcher is open, and the scene morphs into the new one.

Can I try it before paying?

Yes. The 7-day free trial unlocks every feature and needs no account and no card. Keep using Mission Control to arrange your desktops, and use the switcher whenever you are looking for one window, to see whether it earns a shortcut of its own. It needs an Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 14 or later. One payment covers two Macs, and there is a 14 day money back guarantee.
